Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

It was literally a breath of fresh air with its sprawling open world and creative physics engine. Go anywhere, climb anything, if you can see it you can get to it.

From its clothes, gear, weapons and music Splatoon 2 feels like a self contained culture that has created a trendy and stylish world all within a game. It gets a tremendous amount of love from the development team in the form of free updates. It has events called Splatfest every so often to keep the community engaged and the game feeling fresh. It’s a shooter that’s family friendly and something that only Nintendo could have pulled off.

Starlink: Battle for Atlus

Nintendo has had the support of Ubisoft since the Wii days. Ubisoft even supported Nintendo during the dark era of the Wii U. Thankfully for Nintendo, Ubisoft has been hitting some real home runs on the Switch. First with Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle and now with Starlink: Battle for Atlus. Starlink with it’s inclusion of the Starfox characters has stealthy became the best Starfox game in ages. It’s fun, fast and well made everything Starfox Zero on the Wii U was not. Plus this comes with an Arwing toy that is more than worth the price of admission.

Pokemon Let’s Go: First Hands-On Impressions

Over the past week, Tony and Sheldon had the chance to try out the new Pokemon game; Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee.

Sheldon’s Take

I got to try out Let’s Go Pikachu and it was an amazing experience. First off getting to talk to the Nintendo reps was awesome, and checking out the Nintendo kiosk was really cool. On to the game.

I got to play the game with the new Pokeball controller. The controller fits well in your hand and is comfortable to use. The controller has two buttons and the control stick. One of the buttons is the control stick, the other is on the top of the Pokeball. They have simplified the gameplay in a smart way as to bring in more players especially those who have been playing Pokemon Go on their smartphones. The encounters are no longer random as you can see all the pokemon in the environment around you, which I appreciate, especially when searching for a certain pokemon. Also, encounters are set up in the same way as they work in Pokemon Go, you don’t battle the Pokemon down, but instead, use berries to increase your chance of catching them.

pokeball plus — **Pokeball Plus Controller**

The motion control works very well, and it’s much easier to aim then on smartphones. Out of all my throws, I managed two excellent throws and three great throws. The battles are very familiar and work the way they have in past games. You still encounter people to battle with and receive items and money when you defeat your opponent. One feature that has changed is the exp share. Instead of receiving it along the story, you now start with it. You can still turn it off and on as you please though. Overall I’m excited to dig into this game and can’t wait to see what else Nintendo has in store for us in the new Pokemon game.

Tony’s Take

My experience with the demo of Pokemon Lets Go probably differed from Sheldon’s quite a bit. See I don’t have as much knowledge going in as to what a Pokemon game should feel like. I don’t know the ins and outs like some other gamers do. The only core game in the series I have ever played was Pokemon Yellow when it was released a few years ago on the 3DS and of course, I have dabbled in Pokemon GO (along with everyone else in the world) on mobile.

The first thing that jumped out at me was the visuals. The game environments and characters were very bright and vibrant. Much more so than the trailers let on. It really looks like a cartoon. This is the first time seeing the full world of Pokemon in HD and it looks good.

The demo was very limited as to where we could go, basically allowing us to walk through the first grassy area of Kanto. You’ll now see Pokemon before entering encounters with them, it won’t be random anymore. Which I do appreciate. it was still difficult at times to avoid some encounters with pokemon in congested areas despite being able to see them ahead of time. Some of those little pocket monsters are quick I tell ya’.

During the demo, we had the opportunity to try out the Pokeball Plus and I have to say this is where I was really impressed. First of all the device is much smaller than it looks in videos. But it does feel comfortable in the hands. The motion control for catching Pokemon seems much more refined than in Pokemon Go. It seemed to register the motion properly 95% of the time. I will have to test it thoroughly in a controlled environment. There is a technique to it but it shouldn’t be difficult to master.

pokemon lets go eevee — **Buy Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee**

Overall I was very delighted with the quality of the game. It will be the perfect entry point for many people including this veteran gamer and his 5-year-old daughter. My one concern is because of the simplicity of the game with it keep my attention for more than a short time. We won’t have to wait long to find out though because Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee and Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu release Nov 16, 2018, on the Nintendo Switch.

Dragon Sinker: Descendants of Legend Review: A Winner or a Stinker?

In the year since the Nintendo Switch launched there has been a surprising pethera of indie games to play. From platformers to puzzlers, games with a pixel art style seem to be represented at every corner of the eShop. And while one might be at their fill of pixelated indies there is one genre that has been absent. A genre that has memories flooding back of that one parent tripping over the power cord of your console as you and your best friend both hold your breath and wait to see if you’ve lost hours upon hours of progress, Im talking about classic style JRPG’s. Games that are akin to the 8-bit versions of the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest franchises of days gone. The lack of an 8-bit JRGP on the Switch felt like an injustice that needed to be rectified and that’s exactly what KEMCO and Exe-Crate Inc. did with Dragon Sinker: Descendants of Legend for the Nintendo Switch.

I’m Sure We’ve Been Here Before

Dragon Sinker hits your right in the nostalgia’s from the moment the title screen appears. Blasting beautiful chiptunes right into your earholes. But the nostalgia doesn’t stop there. In typical JRPG form you set out on your quest to slay the evil Dragon Wyrmvarg. To do so you’ll need 3 legendary weapons. The same ones your ancestors used generations before to lock away the dastardly dragon. As you progress through Dragon Sinker: Descendants of Legend for the Nintendo Switch you end up with 3 parties to swap between. Those consists of humans, elves and dwarfs. You can add up to 12 additional party members to each of your squads through optional side quests and a lottery function.

In a game flooded with homage to the classics, it isn’t without it’s modern sensibilities. The battle system gives the welcome addition of auto battles. Something that comes in handy when you’re facing a much weaker enemy or trying to grind to level up your characters. You can also use in game points called DRP to resurrect your parties from the dead while giving them full MP and HP right in the heat of battle which is a huge time saver and allows for a much more accessible JRPG experience.

The House Wins

Dragon Sinker was originally a mobile game that made its way to consoles and even the 3DS. Given its roots in mobile there are some microtransaction-esq features baked in. There is a lottery system that allows you to add unique animal characters to your party. And who wouldn’t want that right? Unfortunately using those DRP for the lottery do feel a bit unfair. During my time with the game I was unable to acquire an animal companions. There is also a DRP shop, this actually takes you to the Nintendo eshop to buy items/scrolls for new abilities. While annoying to know that it’s there, I never once felt like I needed to buy anything from the store to progress forward in the game.

The Bottom Line

Dragon Sinker: Descendants of Legend on the Nintendo Switch does a great job of tugging at those rose colored heart strings while adding some modern sensibilities.This game is suited for fans of the genre or newcomers looking for an accessible pick up and play JRPG. Don’t expect a game that pushes the limits of what an JRPG should be or something that evolves the genre. Retro gamers looking for an affordable nostalgic blast from the past without having to “sinker” too much time into a game will have a legendary time.
